An arm lift is one of the most preferred body contouring surgeries after abdominal and breast procedures. It involves the correction of excess skin and fat in the arm area, from the elbow to the shoulder.

Why Do People Need Arm Lift Surgery?

This surgery is often requested after significant weight loss and sometimes after weight gain. Patients’ primary concerns include arms looking bulky in clothing or sagging skin that flaps like wings when raised sideways. Both functional and aesthetic needs motivate patients to undergo this procedure.

How Is the Surgery Performed?

The areas of excess skin to be removed are planned before the surgery. To achieve optimal results, the incisions often extend toward the armpit. The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia.
First, liposuction is applied to the area where the skin will be removed. Sometimes, I also perform liposuction on the outer arm, achieving a more effective thinning of the arm. I generally avoid using drains.

Techniques Used

While liposuction alone may be sufficient to slim the arm, it is often combined with skin removal. The choice between these techniques depends mainly on the quality and excess of the skin.

Pre-Surgery Consultation: Detailed consultations before surgery are crucial to understand your expectations and plan the process effectively. During this session, we will discuss how the procedure will be performed, which techniques will be used, and the recovery process. It’s essential that you avoid smoking and keep your blood pressure under control.

Preparation Process: Preparation includes blood tests, health checks, and pre-surgery nutritional recommendations.

Post-Surgery Recovery:

• Immediately after surgery, keeping your arms elevated above heart level is crucial.
• Swelling and sometimes bruising are expected, usually subsiding within 1–2 weeks.
• Wearing compression garments and performing lymphatic massages is highly beneficial.
• Avoid excessive physical activities and protect your arms from sunlight.

Pain and Discomfort: Mild pain may occur post-surgery but is rare and can be managed with prescribed medication.

Follow-ups and Monitoring: Regular post-surgery checkups are essential to monitor your recovery and detect potential complications early. Arm lift surgeries may leave scars, so it is critical to avoid smoking, protect the scars from sunlight, maintain a healthy diet, and use recommended wound care creams.
